Shopify↗SEOhas gotten harder. Google's 2024-2025 algorithm updates de-prioritized thin product pages, and the rise of AI Overviewsmeans even ranking pages get fewer clicks. The brands that grow Shopifyorganic traffic in 2026 do so through specific tactical moves, not generic "do SEO" advice.
The short version: most teams overcomplicate this. Below is the actual sequence we run for clients, what works, what's a waste of time, and the order to do things in for compounding results.
Technical foundations
1. Fix Shopify's default URL structure issues. Shopifycreates duplicate URLs at /products/{handle} and /collections/{collection}/products/{handle}. Set canonical tags to the /products/ version sitewide. Most themes do this poorly out of the box.
2. Optimize Core Web Vitals. Shopifythemes often score 50-70 on PageSpeed Insights. Aim for 85+. Specific wins: lazy-load images, defer non-critical JavaScript, compress hero images to WebP, remove unused theme features.
3. Submit a clean XML sitemap and monitor in Search Console. Shopifyauto-generates one but you should review what is included, many themes accidentally include thin tag pages or empty collections.
Product page optimization
4. Write unique, detailed product descriptions of 300+ words. Most Shopifyproduct pages are 50-100 words of generic copy. Pages with 300+ words of original copy rank dramatically better.
5. Add FAQ schema to product pages. Each product page should answer 5-8 buyer questions in structured FAQ format. This unlocks rich snippets in search results and improves CTR.
6. Add product reviews schema. Loox or Yotpo apps add this automatically. Listings with star ratings in search results get 30%+ higher CTR.
Collection page optimization
7. Add 300-500 words of category content above or below the product grid. Most Shopifystores have collection pages that are pure product grids, they rank for nothing because there is no text content. Adding substantial commercial-intent content to collection pages is one of the highest-leverage SEOmoves possible.
8. Internal linkingfrom collection pages to top products. Use the collection page intro to link to your top 3-5 products in that category with descriptive anchor text. This passes authority and improves indexing.
Content strategy
9. Build a blog around bottom-of-funnel queries, comparisons, "best X for Y" lists, buying guides. These rank for commercial-intent keywords that drive traffic with real purchase intent. Skip top-of-funnel content like "what is [category]" until you are ranking for the high-intent stuff. For deeper context, see our average Shopify conversion rate guide.
10. Internal linkingfrom blog posts to product and collection pages. Every blog post should link to 3-5 commercial pages with descriptive anchor text. This is how authority flows from informational content to commercial pages.
Off-page
11. Build links to your category and collection pages, not just the homepage. Most brands accidentally build all their links to the homepage. Diversify by getting product reviews, gift guide inclusions, and partner posts that link to specific category pages.
12. Earn local citations if you have a physical location. Even if you sell online primarily, local citations to your business address add E-E-A-T↗signals that improve overall domain authority.
What does NOT work
Spammy backlinkbuilding (PBNs, comment spam, link networks), Google catches these and penalizes harshly.
AI-generated content at scale without editorial oversight, produces generic content that does not rank. (See Shopify Help Centerfor the official documentation.)
"Long-tail keyword" pages targeting search volumes under 50/month, usually not worth the effort unless they are part of a programmatic SEOstrategy with hundreds of pages.
Stuffing keywords in product titles or descriptions, hurts conversion and Google penalizes.
Realistic timelines
Technical fixes: visible in Search Console within 2-4 weeks.
Product page optimization at scale: traffic lift visible at 8-12 weeks for established stores, 4-6 months for newer stores.
Content strategy: traffic compounding starts at month 4-6, meaningful at month 9-12, dominant at month 18-24.
