ChatGPT Ads for Ecommerce in 2026: How They Work and Whether Brands Should Test Them

What OpenAI has actually launched, how advertising on ChatGPT works for online stores, and a practical plan for a first test.

By Manish Chandwani, GrowwithBA · Updated October 14, 2026

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT's answers to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education) see no ads. As of October 2026, ecommerce brands can buy them through a self-serve Ads Manager that is still in beta. You can pay per thousand impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC), choose a conversions objective, and run product ads built straight from a catalog feed. Most ecommerce brands that already have clean product feeds and working conversion tracking should run a small, time-boxed test. Brands that are still fixing their Google or Meta basics should wait and prepare.

This guide covers what OpenAI has actually launched, how the ads work, what is still unknown, and how to plan a sensible first test for a US or Indian ecommerce store.

What OpenAI has launched so far (timeline)

ChatGPT advertising has moved quickly in 2026, so dates matter. Here is what OpenAI's own pages confirm, plus a few points reported by the press.

  • February 9, 2026: OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT in the US for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. The example format was a sponsored product listing below the answer.
  • Early pilot terms: Trade press reported that the pilot was CPM-only with high minimum commitments, and that it ran through a small group of advertisers and partners. OpenAI has not published those pilot rates on its own pages, so treat them as reported, not official.
  • May 5, 2026: OpenAI announced a beta self-serve Ads Manager, added CPC bidding alongside CPM, and said it had recently launched a Conversions API and pixel-based measurement.
  • August 2026: OpenAI's test page lists launches in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Indian press, including Business Today, reported that ChatGPT ads went live in India in late August for Free and Go users, with Ads Manager access for Indian businesses from September 4 and WPP and Omnicom as the first Indian agency partners.
  • October 2026: TechCrunch reported that OpenAI is adding visual display ads next to image generation results. These start in the US later this month with an initial test group of advertisers.

OpenAI labels the whole program a beta. Its help center says delivery systems, inventory, ad formats and buying tools may change, and that there are no cross-advertiser performance benchmarks yet. Keep that in mind when you read anyone's confident ROAS claims.

How ChatGPT ads work

Where ads appear and who sees them

Ads appear below a relevant ChatGPT response. They are labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer. OpenAI says ads do not influence what ChatGPT answers. Ads run across the iOS app, Android app, and mobile and desktop web.

Ads are not shown to users who say they are under 18 or whom OpenAI predicts are under 18. They are also kept away from sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics. Free users can opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily free messages.

How ads are matched

There are no keywords to bid on. OpenAI matches ads using the topic of the current conversation, past chats and past ad interactions. Inside Ads Manager, campaigns can target countries and, for most campaign types, regions, cities or postal codes where available. You can also use custom audiences. Inclusion audiences need at least 25,000 matched users, and OpenAI advises against custom audiences for the EEA and Switzerland because ads personalization is not available there.

Privacy rules advertisers should know

Advertisers do not get access to chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Reporting is aggregated: impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate and, if you set up measurement, conversions. Users can see why an ad appeared, dismiss it, and clear their ad history and ad data.

Buying models and budgets

According to OpenAI's help article on creating campaigns, there are three objectives:

  • Views: billed per 1,000 impressions (CPM).
  • Clicks: billed per valid click (CPC).
  • Conversions: optimizes toward a conversion event you choose. Billing is by click (oCPC) or by impression (oCPM), not per conversion.

The minimum daily budget is 25 USD in the US and 725 INR in India, with other local minimums listed for each billing currency. Daily budgets work as a seven-day average. Spend can reach up to 2x the daily budget on a given day, but no more than 7x across a Sunday to Saturday week. You cannot change a campaign's objective after you create it, so pick carefully.

Product feed campaigns (the ecommerce format)

The format that matters most for online stores is the product feed campaign, which is in beta. You upload a catalog, and Ads Manager builds product ads that show the product image, title, star rating, price, sale price and brand. OpenAI's help article says these have been among the strongest performers in the program, though it gives no figures.

  • Feeds can be uploaded as CSV or TXT, pulled from a hosted HTTPS URL, or sent by SFTP. Manually uploaded items expire after two weeks, so use a scheduled URL or SFTP.
  • Products are ad-eligible by default unless you mark them otherwise.
  • Custom labels in an ads_metadata field (for example a margin tier or product line) let you split products into ad groups.
  • Each ad group uses one template. Titles and descriptions come from your feed data, so feed quality is your creative.
  • Product feed campaigns support country-level targeting only, and the default bid strategy for new ad groups is "Maximize results".
  • Feed products appear only in ads during the beta, not in organic ChatGPT shopping answers.

OpenAI's help pages do not mention a native Shopify or Google Merchant Center connection. Plan on exporting a feed yourself or using a feed tool.

Where you can advertise from

OpenAI's availability page lists 63 countries where self-serve Ads Manager is available, including the United States, India, the UK, Canada, Australia, the UAE, Singapore and much of Europe. Your advertising and billing legal entity must be based in a listed country. Some new accounts can only advertise in their home country at first. Running ads in other countries requires identity verification and a certain level of home-country spend. That matters for Indian brands hoping to target US shoppers from day one.

If you are deciding how to split budget between the two established channels first, our breakdown of Meta Ads vs Google Ads in 2026 is a good starting point.

Should your brand test ChatGPT ads?

A test makes sense when most of these are true:

  • Your products are considered purchases that people research and compare, such as electronics, home goods, skincare routines, gifts or premium apparel.
  • You have a clean, complete product feed you already use for Google Shopping or Meta catalogs.
  • Conversion tracking on your Google and Meta campaigns is reliable, so you can compare channels fairly.
  • You can set aside a test budget you are prepared to treat as learning spend.
  • Your category is allowed under OpenAI's ad policies.

Wait, or keep the test very small, if your margins are thin, your feed is messy, your tracking is unreliable, or your category falls under a restricted policy area.

Check the ad policies first

OpenAI's ad policies (last updated September 10, 2026) disallow alcohol above 0.5% ABV, tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, cannabis and THC, gambling, adult content and counterfeit goods. Health and financial products are restricted to approved US advertisers, and health and financial ads outside the US are generally prohibited. Supplements sold through major retailers may be allowed if they make no medical claims. Diet pills and detox products with unsupported claims are not allowed. Landing pages must match the ad and must be reviewable by OpenAI's systems, so avoid blocking crawlers on your product pages.

How to prepare: feeds, creative and measurement

1. Clean up your product feed

  • Write descriptive titles: brand, product type, key attribute, size or variant. Your titles become the ad copy.
  • Use high-quality product images on clean backgrounds. The template only lets you choose the image field, so the image does a lot of work.
  • Keep price, sale price and availability in sync with your store. Use a scheduled hosted URL or SFTP, not one-off uploads that expire.
  • Add custom labels for margin tier, bestsellers and seasonal lines so you can group and exclude products.
  • Exclude low-margin, out-of-stock and policy-sensitive SKUs from the test.

2. Prepare creative for standard ads

Non-feed ads use an advertiser name, favicon, short title, short description, image and landing page. Write for a shopper mid-research. Clear benefits, honest price claims and a landing page that answers the question they were asking will do better than generic brand slogans. Your logo should not be the main image.

3. Set up measurement before you spend

  • Install the ChatGPT ads pixel and, ideally, the Conversions API, using the Pixel ID and key from Ads Manager. Send purchase events with a consistent order ID so pixel and server events can be deduplicated.
  • If you use Triple Whale, Northbeam, Rockerbox, Fospha, WorkMagic, INCRMNTAL, Hightouch or LiveRamp, OpenAI lists setup guides for each.
  • Add UTM parameters to every landing page URL so GA4 and Shopify reports show ChatGPT ads as a separate source.
  • Decide your success metric in advance: cost per purchase, new customer rate or blended contribution margin, not just CTR.

4. Strengthen your organic presence too

Ads sit below ChatGPT's answers, and the answers themselves still drive a lot of discovery. Brands that are cited in organic answers get two chances to be seen. Our guides on ChatGPT for ecommerce and how to rank in ChatGPT citations cover that side, and our GEO and AEO service handles it end to end.

A simple budget test plan

  1. Pick one country and one product group. Start in your home market, since new accounts may be limited to it anyway.
  2. Run for four weeks. At the 25 USD daily minimum, one campaign costs roughly 700 USD over 28 days. At 725 INR it is roughly 20,300 INR. Many brands will want more than the minimum to collect enough clicks to learn from.
  3. Use a Clicks (CPC) or Conversions objective, so you pay for engagement rather than raw impressions while you learn.
  4. Split into two ad groups by custom label, for example bestsellers vs a high-margin line, so you learn which products suit conversational shoppers.
  5. Review weekly, not daily. Spend data lags by several hours and budgets pace over a seven-day window.
  6. Compare against your Google Shopping and Meta catalog benchmarks on the same metric. Then decide to scale, adjust or pause.

Common mistakes

  • Launching without conversion tracking. Without the pixel or Conversions API, you only see clicks and cannot judge profitability.
  • Uploading a feed once and forgetting it. Manual uploads expire after two weeks, and stale prices damage trust and break policy rules.
  • Choosing the wrong objective. Objectives cannot be changed later, so a Views campaign started by mistake has to be rebuilt.
  • Judging results in the first few days. Weekly pacing and delayed spend reporting make daily reads misleading.
  • Ignoring policy. Restricted categories and unreviewable landing pages lead to disapproved ads.
  • Expecting keyword control. There are no keywords. Your feed data, labels and landing pages do the targeting work.
  • Believing early hype. OpenAI itself says there are no benchmarks yet. Rely on your own controlled test.

Quick checklist

  • Category is allowed under OpenAI ad policies
  • Your legal entity is in a supported Ads Manager country
  • Account verified and billing set up
  • Product feed complete, on a scheduled URL or SFTP, with custom labels
  • Pixel and Conversions API installed, purchase events deduplicated
  • UTMs on every landing page URL
  • One country, one or two product groups, four-week test budget approved
  • Success metric and scale or pause rule written down before launch

Frequently asked questions

Are ChatGPT ads available in India?

Yes. Press reports say ads began showing to Free and Go users in India in late August 2026, and OpenAI's availability page lists India as a supported country for self-serve Ads Manager. The minimum daily budget is 725 INR.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI has not published standard rates. You set your own budget and bids on a CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized objective, with a minimum daily budget of 25 USD in the US or 725 INR in India.

Do ChatGPT Plus users see ads?

No. OpenAI says ads are shown only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users do not see ads.

Can I connect my Shopify store directly to ChatGPT ads?

OpenAI's help center does not list a native Shopify integration for ads. You upload a product feed by file, hosted URL or SFTP, which you can export from Shopify or a feed management tool.

Will running ChatGPT ads improve my organic visibility in ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, and feed products appear only in ads during the beta. Organic visibility depends on being a credible, well-cited source, which is a separate effort.
