To get your products and pages shown in Google AI Mode in 2026, you do the same work Google rewards in classic Search, then go further on product data. Google says there are no special requirements or AI-only markup for AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and your site must not be opted out of generative AI features in Search Console. For ecommerce, the biggest levers are a complete, accurate Merchant Center feed (now with new conversational attributes), structured data that matches the visible page, and category and guide content that answers the follow-up questions AI Mode generates behind the scenes. Then track results in Search Console's Generative AI performance report, which Google rolled out to all sites worldwide on August 31, 2026.
What Google AI Mode is, and why it matters for online stores
AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience. A shopper asks a long, specific question, gets an AI-written answer with links, and keeps asking follow-ups. Google describes it as breaking a question into subtopics and searching for each one at the same time, a technique it calls query fan-out.
For a store, that changes the shape of discovery. Instead of one query like "running shoes", a shopper might ask "cushioned running shoes for flat feet under $150 that work on trails". AI Mode then runs many related searches, pulls product listings from Google's Shopping Graph, and cites web pages that support its answer. Your product can win a spot because one specific attribute or one helpful page matched one of those hidden sub-queries.
Where AI Mode is available in 2026
According to Google's AI Mode help page, AI Mode is available in a long list of countries and territories across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa, including the United States and India. The supported language list is also long. It includes English, Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil), plus Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Urdu and Sindhi.
The important nuance: AI Mode being available in a country does not mean every shopping feature is. Many shopping features launched in the US first, and some are still US only. Check each feature before you plan around it.
AI Mode shopping features you should know
Google announced its AI Mode shopping experience in May 2025. It is built on the Shopping Graph, which Google said then holds more than 50 billion product listings, with over 2 billion refreshed every hour. Here is where the main features stand, based on what Google and trade press have published.
| Feature | What it does | Availability (as published) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping Graph product results | Shows product listings, comparisons and visual results inside AI Mode answers | Launched in the US first. Check your market before planning around it. | Your Merchant Center data is the main input |
| Virtual try-on | Shoppers upload a full-length photo to try on apparel listings | US from May 2025 via Search Labs. Reported expansion to Australia, Canada and Japan in October 2025. India not confirmed. | Apparel brands need clean, high-quality product images |
| Price tracking | Shoppers set size, color and a target price, then get alerts | Announced May 2025, US focus | Accurate, current prices and sale prices in your feed |
| Agentic checkout ("buy for me") | Google can complete a purchase with Google Pay after the shopper confirms | US only at launch, reported live from November 2025 with select merchants | Eligibility depends on merchant participation and setup |
| UCP-powered checkout | A Buy button on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini, with you as seller of record | Select merchants, for products eligible in the US, Canada and Australia. Phased early access. | Technical integration plus Merchant Center onboarding |
| Ads in AI Mode | Sponsored placements in or below AI Mode answers | In testing. Google has not published a full country list for AI Mode ads. | Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are the entry point |
Agentic checkout and the Universal Commerce Protocol
Two checkout ideas are now in play. The first is agentic checkout tied to price tracking: when a tracked item hits the shopper's price, they confirm details and Google completes the purchase with Google Pay. The second is UCP-powered checkout. Google's Merchant Center help says this places a checkout button on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini while you remain the seller of record. It is limited to select merchants, requires meeting Google's UCP technical requirements and a Google Pay and Wallet Console account, and only listings flagged with the native commerce checkout eligibility attribute show the Buy button.
For most brands, this is a watch-and-prepare item, not a this-week task. If you sell in the US, Canada or Australia and have engineering support, submit the interest form and review the UCP guides. If you sell only in India, there is no published timeline yet, so focus on feed quality first.
Ads in AI Mode
Google began testing ads in AI Mode in 2025 and said advertisers running Performance Max, Shopping, or broad match Search campaigns (including AI Max for Search) could be eligible. At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google said it is testing two new ad formats built with Gemini: Conversational Discovery ads, which answer a person's specific question, and Highlighted Answers, which can appear in AI Mode recommendation lists. Both stay labeled "Sponsored". Google also described Direct Offers, a pilot that started in January 2026, which lets advertisers surface exclusive deals inside AI Mode responses.
Google has not published segmented reporting or a full country list for AI Mode ads. Treat it as a test surface. Your best preparation is the same as for organic: a strong feed and well-structured Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. Our Google Shopping ads guide covers the feed and campaign structure side.
How Google says sites appear in AI Mode
Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features in Search is unusually direct. The key points for ecommerce teams:
- SEO still applies. AI Mode is rooted in Google's core ranking and quality systems. It retrieves pages from the Search index and cites them.
- No special files or markup. Google says you do not need llms.txt, AI text files, special schema or Markdown versions of pages for Google Search. They neither help nor hurt.
- No need to "chunk" content into tiny pieces or rewrite pages in an AI style.
- Do not build pages for every fan-out query. Google warns that mass-producing pages for query variations to manipulate AI answers can violate its scaled content abuse policy.
- Merchant Center and Business Profile matter. Google says AI responses can include product listings and local business details, and points merchants to Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profile.
- Eligibility. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Indexing and serving are never guaranteed.
This is why AI search work is best treated as an extension of SEO, not a replacement. See GEO vs SEO explained for how the two fit together across Google, ChatGPT and other assistants.
Practical steps to get products shown in AI Mode
1. Make Merchant Center your source of truth
AI Mode's product answers draw on the Shopping Graph, and Merchant Center is how you feed it directly. Start here:
- Fix every disapproval and warning in Merchant Center, including price and availability mismatches between the feed and the landing page.
- Write titles that lead with what shoppers filter on: brand, product type, key attribute, size or variant. Avoid promotional text.
- Fill descriptive attributes fully: color, size, material, pattern, gender, age group, and product highlights. Each one is a chance to match a fan-out query.
- Keep GTINs, brand and MPN accurate so Google can match your product to the right entity.
- Submit shipping and return policies in Merchant Center. Shoppers ask about delivery and returns, and AI answers can use that information.
2. Add Google's new conversational attributes
Google's Merchant Center product data specification now includes optional attributes that suit conversational shopping. The most useful for most stores are:
- question_and_answer: user-, merchant- and manufacturer-authored Q&As about the product (up to 30 values). Use real questions from support tickets, reviews and sales chats.
- related_product: how items relate, such as required parts and accessories.
- item_group_title: a parent title shared by all variants in a product group.
- document_link: links to PDF manuals, spec sheets or size charts.
- popularity_rank: your own 0 to 100 score for how popular a product is in your catalog.
Only add answers that are true and match what is on the product page. Google says not to repeat the same information across highlights, Q&A and the description.
3. Keep structured data accurate and consistent
Structured data is not required for AI Mode, but Google still recommends it for rich results, and it must match visible page content. For product pages, use Product markup with Offer details (price, currency, availability), plus shipping and return details where they apply. Run key templates through the Rich Results Test after every theme or app change. Our schema markup guide for 2026 lists the types that matter for stores and common implementation errors.
4. Build content for fan-out questions, not fan-out pages
Fan-out queries are the sub-questions AI Mode asks on a shopper's behalf. Google's own example: a query about fixing a weedy lawn might fan out to herbicides, chemical-free removal and prevention. For a store, the equivalent sub-questions are about fit, use case, comparison, compatibility, care and price. Answer them on pages that already deserve to exist:
- Category pages: add a short, genuinely useful buying guide above or below the grid. Explain how to choose, not just "shop now".
- Product pages: cover sizing, materials, who it is for and not for, care, compatibility and what is in the box. Add an FAQ based on real customer questions.
- Comparison and guide content: one strong page per real decision ("merino vs synthetic base layers"), not 40 near-duplicate pages per keyword variant.
- First-hand proof: Google stresses non-commodity content. Original photos, demo videos, fit notes from your team and honest pros and cons beat rewritten spec sheets.
Our ecommerce SEO strategy for 2026 shows how to plan category, product and guide content together so it serves both classic results and AI answers.
5. Cover the technical basics
- Allow Googlebot in robots.txt and confirm your CDN, firewall or bot protection is not blocking it.
- Make sure product content, prices and reviews render as text that Google can see, even on JavaScript-heavy themes.
- Handle faceted navigation and variant URLs with canonicals so crawl budget goes to pages that matter.
- Check that you have not set nosnippet or max-snippet values that hide useful product content.
- In Search Console, confirm your site is not opted out of Search generative AI features unless that is a deliberate choice.
How to measure AI Mode traffic in Search Console
Google says clicks and impressions from AI features, including AI Mode, are counted in the standard Performance report under the Web search type. In June 2026, Google added a separate Generative AI performance report, and as of August 31, 2026 it is rolled out to all websites worldwide. It shows impressions, pages, countries, devices (for Search) and dates at hourly, daily, weekly or monthly granularity. It does not list clicks or queries, and it groups AI Overviews and AI Mode together rather than splitting them.
A practical setup:
- Export the Generative AI report monthly and note which product, category and guide URLs earn impressions.
- Compare those URLs against their classic Search clicks in the main Performance report.
- In Google Analytics, track conversion rate and revenue for organic landing pages, since Google says clicks from results pages with AI features tend to be higher quality.
- Use our AI Overviews traffic loss calculator to estimate exposure on informational queries where AI answers reduce clicks.
Be careful with third-party tools that claim to see "inside" Google's AI. Google states that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.
Common mistakes
- Chasing AI-only hacks. llms.txt files, "AI-friendly" rewrites and chunked pages do not help in Google Search, according to Google.
- Mass-producing fan-out pages. Hundreds of thin variant pages risk a scaled content abuse issue and rarely earn citations.
- Neglecting the feed. Many stores optimize product pages but leave Merchant Center attributes half empty, which limits product visibility in AI answers.
- Mismatched data. Different prices or stock status in the feed, markup and page erode trust and can trigger disapprovals.
- Assuming US features apply everywhere. Indian brands in particular should verify each shopping feature before planning around it.
- Blocking Googlebot by accident. Aggressive bot protection on Shopify or headless setups can quietly remove pages from eligibility.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
Only in a limited form. In March 2026 OpenAI said it is letting merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on product discovery, and its developer docs say Instant Checkout is available to approved partners.
What is the difference between ACP, UCP and AP2?
ACP is the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe, now used mainly to share product feeds with ChatGPT. UCP is Google's Universal Commerce Protocol for discovery and checkout on Google surfaces, and AP2 is Google's Agent Payments Protocol for securely authorizing agent-led payments.
Do Shopify stores need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT shopping?
OpenAI says Shopify merchants are integrated through Shopify Catalog with no additional setup. It is still worth reviewing Agentic Storefronts settings in your Shopify admin and improving product data quality.
Can Indian ecommerce brands use agentic checkout yet?
The confirmed in-chat checkout features are US-first, with Google naming Canada, Australia and later the UK as next. Indian brands can still improve discovery through Merchant Center feeds and on-site structured data, and Google lists India among markets getting its AI performance insights tool.
Do I need to pay to appear in AI shopping results?
OpenAI describes ChatGPT shopping results as organic and not ads, and Perplexity says its picks reflect shopper needs rather than advertisers. Paid options such as Google's Direct Offers pilot exist separately.
