Free rank trackers and keyword difficulty checkers (2026): what you actually get for $0

A sourced look at the free tiers of Search Console, Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, SE Ranking and more, with the published limits and how to combine them.

By Manish Chandwani, GrowwithBA · Updated October 6, 2026

Key takeaways

  • You can track rankings for $0, but every free option trades away either keyword count, update frequency or control over location.
  • Google Search Console is the most complete free ranking data for your own site, because it reports real impressions rather than a single sample search.
  • The Semrush free plan lists Position Tracking for 10 keywords and 10 queries a day for research tools.
  • Ahrefs and SE Ranking both offer keyword difficulty (KD) checkers that work without registration. Mangools KWFinder gives 5 free lookups per 24 hours.
  • KD scores are vendor estimates built from different inputs, so a "30" in one tool is not a "30" in another.
  • Wincher was left out of the list: its pricing page says it does not offer a public free plan.

Searches for "ahrefs free", "kd checker" and "free rank tracker" usually come from the same person: someone with a site, a short keyword list and no budget yet. The good news is that the free tier landscape in 2026 is genuinely useful. The catch is that every free option is limited in a different way, and the limits are not always published.

This guide lists what each tool's own pages say you get for $0, links to the source, and says plainly when a limit is not published. If you want the paid comparison instead, see our guide to the best rank tracking tools for 2026.

Free rank tracking options

Google Search Console

Google describes Search Console as a free service for monitoring your site's presence in Google Search. The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, CTR and average position, with a default view of the past three months.

The strength here is that the numbers come from real searches. The weakness is that it only covers sites you verify, and it only shows queries where you already earned impressions. It will not tell you where a competitor ranks.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified websites, with no limit on the number of sites. Site Explorer "shows which pages and keywords bring the most organic traffic," with 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once. Site Audit gets 5,000 crawl credits per month per project.

It is a strong way to see the keywords your site ranks for from Ahrefs' own data. It is not a daily tracker for a list you choose.

Semrush free plan

Semrush's knowledge base says the Free plan gives you access to "1 demo project and 10 reports per day." Its Position Tracking documentation lists 10 keywords across 1 website for accounts without an SEO Toolkit, and Semrush's own free account guide says you can "track up to 10 keywords" with daily data.

For many small sites, this is the closest thing to a real rank tracker at $0. Ten keywords is tight, so choose the ones tied to revenue or leads.

Ubersuggest free account

The Ubersuggest pricing page says a free account gets "more keyword suggestions," "weekly rank tracking" and "personalized SEO suggestions." It does not publish how many keywords the free account can track. Treat it as a light option and confirm the cap inside the app.

SE Ranking Google Rank Checker

SE Ranking's free rank checker runs a one-off check for a keyword, an optional domain, a country and desktop or mobile. When checked, the page showed "5 free attempts left for today" and asked users to sign up to see the top 100 results. It is useful for spot checks, especially from a country you are not in, but it does not store history.

If location matters to your business, our local rank tracker guide covers the extra steps.

Why Search Console's average position differs from a rank tracker

Google explains that position in Search Console is the topmost position occupied by a link to your property, averaged across all queries in which your site appeared. A link must get an impression for its position to be recorded. Google also notes that search results are "specific to the time, place, device, and recent history of the person searching."

A rank tracker usually runs one search from one set location and device. So a tracker might show position 4 while Search Console shows 6.3. Neither is wrong. Use Search Console for the real-world average and a tracker for a consistent, repeatable snapshot.

Free keyword difficulty options

Ahrefs free KD checker

The Ahrefs Keyword Difficulty checker says "No registration required." It returns a KD score from 0 to 100, an estimate of how many referring domains you may need to reach the top 10, and a SERP overview. Ahrefs notes that KD "doesn't take into account any on-page factors" and estimates top 10 chances, not top 3.

SE Ranking keyword difficulty checker

SE Ranking states that "you don't have to sign up or subscribe" to use its free keyword difficulty checker. It describes KD as how hard it is to rank in the organic top 10, based on the top-ranking pages, their backlink profiles and domain qualities. A usage limit is not published.

Semrush Keyword Overview

Semrush's free account includes Keyword Research at 10 queries per day. Semrush defines KD% as the effort needed to rank in Google's top 10, scored 0 to 100, using factors such as the median number of referring domains to ranking URLs and the median authority score of ranking domains.

Moz Keyword Explorer

Moz calls Keyword Explorer a free keyword research tool and lists Monthly Volume, Organic CTR, Difficulty and Minimum Domain Authority among its metrics. Its help guide confirms there is a monthly query limit that resets, but the free number was not published on the pages checked. Moz's Difficulty documentation says the score analyses the strength of the top 10 organic results and factors in Page Authority and Domain Authority.

Mangools KWFinder

The KWFinder page offers "5 lookups per 24 hours, 15 related and 5 competitor keywords per lookup for free." Mangools' FAQ says the free plan needs no credit card and that its KD is based on data from its SERPChecker module.

Keyword Surfer

Surfer describes Keyword Surfer as "100% Free. Forever." It shows search volume, CPC, estimated traffic and keyword ideas inside Google results, with data for 70 countries. The page does not list a difficulty score, so pair it with one of the KD checkers above.

Why KD scores differ between tools

Each vendor builds KD from its own data. Ahrefs weights referring domains to top-ranking pages. Semrush blends median referring domains, follow ratios and authority scores. Moz uses Page Authority and Domain Authority. Mangools uses its own SERP data. Each tool also has its own backlink index.

So the same keyword can score 20 in one tool and 45 in another. The practical rule is to pick one tool, compare keywords against each other inside it, and then look at the actual results page. Our keyword research guide walks through that review step.

How to build a $0 tracking setup

  1. Verify your site in Google Search Console. This is your baseline for real clicks, impressions and average position.
  2. Add the same site to Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Use Site Explorer to see ranking keywords Search Console may group differently, and run Site Audit within the 5,000 monthly crawl credits.
  3. Pick your 10 most important keywords. Choose terms tied to sales or leads, not vanity terms.
  4. Track those 10 in Semrush's free Position Tracking. This gives you a consistent daily snapshot for one location.
  5. Choose one KD checker and stick with it. Ahrefs or SE Ranking work without registration. Record the score with the date so you can compare later.
  6. Use Keyword Surfer for volume and ideas while you browse Google results.
  7. Review monthly. Compare Search Console average position with your tracker. Large gaps often point to location or device differences, not errors.

When paying makes sense

Free tools stop being enough when you need more than about 10 tracked keywords, several locations, competitor tracking, or history you can export for clients. Agencies and multi-location businesses usually hit those walls first.

Before paying, list the exact limit you keep hitting. If it is research volume, compare options in our keyword research tools roundup. If it is tracking, a paid rank tracker is the better spend. Wincher, for example, says on its pricing page that it has no public free plan, and its rank tracker page offers a 7-day free trial instead.

Method note

Every limit in this article comes from each vendor's own page, read on October 6, 2026. Where a vendor did not publish a number, we say "limit not published." We did not run usage tests. Free tiers change often, so check the linked page before you rely on a specific number. Wincher was excluded because its pricing FAQ says it does not offer a public free plan.

FAQ

Is there a truly free rank tracker?

Yes. Google Search Console is free and shows average position for queries your site already appears for. For tracking a short list of chosen keywords, Semrush's free plan lists Position Tracking for 10 keywords, and Ubersuggest's free account mentions weekly rank tracking, though Ubersuggest does not publish the free keyword limit.

What is the best free keyword difficulty checker?

There is no single best one, because each vendor builds its score differently. Ahrefs and SE Ranking both offer KD checkers that work without signing up, and Mangools KWFinder gives 5 free lookups per 24 hours. A practical approach is to pick one tool and use it consistently so your scores stay comparable.

Is Ahrefs free?

Parts of it are. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you verify and includes Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics with published limits. The Ahrefs keyword difficulty checker is free with no registration. Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker are not among the tools listed in the free offer.

Why does Search Console show a different position than my rank tracker?

Search Console averages the topmost position your site held across every impression it actually received, over many locations, devices and users. A rank tracker usually checks one keyword from one set location and device at one moment. Both can be correct while showing different numbers.
